A seaside town located on the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula – Victor Harbor, is a popular local and tourist vacation destination. Known for its agriculture and fisheries based economy, it is especially popular with the Adelaide locals, that not only escape to the harbor during the scorching summer months but also choose it as a celebration location for their high school graduation.
So what makes this retreat so popular?
Well, not only is the town known for its marvelous beaches, popular Granite Island, which stands as an ecological attraction, and the surrounding nature. The recreation park found on Granite Island is worth a visit on its own.
The tremendous granite boulders not only give the name to the island but also create the gorgeous white crashing waves that help create a great atmosphere found on the island. It is also the place for the best views you’ll find in the Victor Harbour area, with every corner of the island being photo-worthy.
One of the more enjoyable activities found on the resort has to be the penguin tours.
This is your only opportunity to access the island during dusk, as only the people joining the tour are allowed to do so. This is the time the little penguins make their way back to the island from the sea, after their feeding session.
Penguins aren’t where the animal diversity ends though, as whale watching is the other big activity found in the resort. South Australia, where Victor Harbour is situated, is known for its large animal diversity and that trend doesn’t stop with whales, as 29 different species have been recorded in the region.
When it comes to the resort, the southern right whales are what you’re looking out for, as they perfect for land-based whale watching. And this is just a small part of what Granite Island and Victor Harbour as a whole have to offer.
Once you’re back on the mainland, the wildlife shifts from the aquatic to onshore, and places like the Softfoot Farm are great places to visit. If you love soft, fluffy animals, this place will feel like heaven. The farm is a sanctuary for alpacas.
But that’s not where the extent of the farm ends, as over the years it became one of the more awarded farms in Australia, planting many of Australians native plants, constructing wetlands, focusing on breeding alpacas, and more. If you want to take a look at an awarded Australian farm overrun by alpacas, this might be your best chance.
Australia is known for its unique wildlife and it would be a shame to miss an opportunity to get to see as much of it as possible. Such establishments as Urimbirra Wildlife Park make that very easy. 5 minutes away from Victor Harbour, it is a very popular destination to visit.
As it’s open every day throughout the year, you don’t have to worry about planning when to visit the park. Great picnic and rest areas with easy parking will be the smallest things throughout the experience, as the open-range wildlife park is home to koalas, kangaroos, snakes, emus, and much more.
Not only that, but you are free to get up close and friendly, as getting a photo with a small and friendly kangaroo is a norm. The Western Grey Kangaroos are not caged and are free to roam and that is exactly where you’ll be able to meet them.
The same goes for koalas, and at the low prices that the park charges, it is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
The town and its surrounding areas have so much to offer that it is hard to fit everything in a single article. From its nature to islands, the aquatic and land wildlife, the plethora of hiking and biking trails, there is so much to discover and enjoy it is no surprise why the location has been a local favorite as a school end celebration for decades.
