There are over 285 trails to ski in the area which brings people from around the world but that is not all this great western town has to offer. The history of Breckenridge is steeped in the lure of the American west.

The town was founded by gold prospectors and an American General. The town was named after the then vice president “Brickenridge”.

When the American civil war began the then Vice President sided with the confederates, which the town did not agree with, they dropped the “I” from the name and replaced it with an “e” as a form of protest.

The boom of the gold rush brought prospectors to Breckenridge by the thousands. Mining using pans was a popular way to mine in the early 1850’s.

The river was full of miners hoping to strike it rich using the pan process. Once the gold ran out by 1870, the population deflated to a mere 51 people! However, there was a second rush for sliver and lead just 10 years later that caused another influx of miners, this time the population swelled to over 2000.

Breckenridge In 1887 “Toms Baby” was discovered by Tom Groves, it was a 13 pound gold nugget! Again, Breckenridge became a destination for dreamers!

This town is rich in American gold rush history. Today of course, people are still flocking to Breckenridge but for totally different reasons.

The Gold Pan Saloon in Breckenridge is the longest standing bar west of the Mississippi! It has been around since the original gold rush days and is an interesting place to visit, even if you do not partake in adult beverages.

There are examples of historic architecture through out the town that really delivers that old west vibe. The historic district buildings while painted vibrant colors to highlight the area, have been standing since the first gold rush.

The biggest draw to the area is the ski resorts. The Breckenridge Ski Resort hosts thousands of visitors each year. Alpine sports are available year round thanks to the high elevations of the mountains. Each year the region hosts the Snow Sculpture Championship where you can see amazing art forms crafted from the snow.

Dog sledding, wine tasting, snow tubing, sledding, if you can think of a snow sport, Breckenridge offers it. The base elevation of this area is over 9000 ft, which makes the oxygen bars a very popular attraction.

This is a great place for a fun holiday that is focused on outdoor activities and enjoying the American west history and there is also things to do for lovers of art and culture. Breckenridge has museums and theaters that are well-worth the visit.
