It is about 35km northeast of Surat Thani Town. It is the largest island in the Chumphon Archipelago. It is about 25km wide. It is surrounded by other smaller islands most smaller and less significant.
The island has likely been inhabited for many centuries but written histories are not available to pinpoint any specific era however there is evidence that the inhabitation of the islands date back at least 4 centuries.
It has a lush tropical rainforest in the center of the island with Khoa Pom mountain its largest mountain at 635m. The island is ringed by 51Km of roadway that makes travel easier with smaller veins of roads into the villages and other areas.
