It was a mining town, located close to the four corners where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah meet. This area has it all, to the west there is a dessert, the Animas River runs through it and to the North there is 2 million acres of nature at the San Juan National Forest.

It is visually stunning to see all the different geography from one location. The snow capped mountains, the desert, the red clay of the river valley, it is rare to find one place that has so much to offer.

This area is rich in American history. It was established in 1880 as a mining town. It sits at an elevation of over 6000 feet and became a popular destination pretty early on because of the railroad that was built right through it connecting the eastern and the western states of the US.

Durango had the reputation of being a “wild west” type of town because of all the miners and others that headed their to lay their claim and find their fortune. There was a huge influx of people during the turn of the 19th century and not a lot of laws to manage them.

Today, Durango is much like any historic western town, very relaxed and rife with history!

In the middle of the town you find the Main Avenue, which is loaded with quaint boutiques, museums, eateries and more. This is a Nationally Registered Historic District that is complete with old buildings that give you the feeling that you are back in time.

It has great examples of early American architecture that has made it the tourist hot spot that it is. When you want to experience what it was like to walk down the streets of the old west, Main Avenue is the place to take that walk.

There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in this area and not surprisingly American fare is the focus. Brisket, ribs, burgers and more dot the menus. Like much of Colorado, Durango is a very environmentally friendly town that takes conservation and good environmental practices very seriously.

The streets are free of litter, the greenways are protected and the residents do their part to reduce their carbon footprint.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a nationally recognized heritage railroad that still uses a steam locomotive. The trail from Durango to Silverton is an interesting ride that draws tourists and train lovers from around the globe.

You can ride the railroad and enjoy a meal and be amazed by what was once state of the art technology and of course soak in the beautiful views from your train car. The canyons are simply stunning that the train travels through.

Durango is not only rich in history it is also a rich outdoor lovers paradise. From fly fishing on the river to the skiing in the mountains, nature plays a primary role in the attention that this destination gets. It has also been a hot bed for Hollywood made movies, with many western type movies, using Durango as its set.
