As it’s an archipelago, you’ll most like to find yourself spending most time either near the beach or in the variety of smaller islands found around the New Caledonia main body. Plage de Luengoni, Yejele or Baie de Jinek, and many more are great beaches that all share the same sun-kissed beaches and wonderful blue crystal-clear water.

These locations are wonderful for all-day relaxation, diving, and other water-based activities. The local marine life is a treat to observe, with over 9000 species to find and see, if you like spending your time scuba diving or just simply swimming around, you’ll find something nice to awe at.

From exotic fish to sharks, turtles, and other wonderful marine mammals and birds. The local ecosystem is large and deep and is a treat to explore and get to known if that sort of a thing interests you.

One of the more popular locations to visit is Amedee Island where you’ll find a lighthouse that serves as one of the better locations to get a great view in the archipelago. The tower stands 56 meters (just over 180 feet) high and has stood on the island since 1862, when it was erected, after making its way all across the globe, as it was built in Paris.

It’s a popular excursion, just across an emerald green reef lagoon, home to the white sun-kissed sand you would expect from the region. Just keep in mind to watch out for sea snakes that like to come onto the sand to bathe in the sun. If you let them be, they are sure to do the same.

It has been already mentioned that New Caledonia is home to some great French cuisine challenging the likes of mainland France. The island has been claimed by the country since 1853, so the cuisine is quite hard set and developed.

You are sure to easily find a glass of Bordeaux and a fresh-baked baguette, but the traditional Melanesian cuisine is also on the menu, with the Bougna dish being an interesting offering that you might not get to chance to find anywhere else.

The dish is made from chicken, fish, bananas, sweet potatoes, yams, and coconut milk that gets wrapped in banana leaves, which then gets steamed. If you want a unique exotic taste, that is a great choice.

Whilst it not might sound the most exciting, one of the better things you can do in the region is to simply do nothing. It’s rare that we get to completely relax and check out nowadays, so when you get a chance to place yourself in a position where relaxing near the beach under the wonderful ocean breeze.

While the island is a dream-like getaway from a travel catalog, it gets visited by around 100,000 people a year, so it never gets too busy. Given this, the abundance of wonderful beaches, great local food, and opportunities for water-based activities makes it a wonderful place to relax either by yourself or with a loved one.

The weather is also usually great, ranging from 19 to 29 degrees Celsius as the year passes, there’s never a bad time to visit. If you prefer the heat, the winter months are your pick and if you don’t mind milder temperatures, the summer months cool down to the pleasantly warm climate.

It’s overall a solid choice, and you don’t even have to worry about starting to learn some French, as all of the tourist areas are more than familiar and adapted to English.
