Right at the heart of Mexico, the most populated city in all of North America, Mexico City, the capital and the largest city of the country stands as not only an important cultural center for Mexico but as a global cultural and financial powerhouse.

The city is famous for many things, one of which being both one of the most intriguing and the one that talks about the origins of the city – the fact, that the modern-day Mexico City has been built on the ruins of an ancient Aztec city, formerly known as Tenochtitlan.

The Nahua Culture, which is the culture of indigenous people from Mexico, including the Aztecs is still rather prominent in modern-day Mexico. The Aztecs that are also known as Mexicas mainly concentrated in the valley of Mexico, which is now known as Mexico City, and the states that surround it, this makes the capital the prime location to discover about the past of the region.

The speakers of the native language of Nahuatl are still found throughout the region, with around 1.5 million people estimated to still speak the language today. The culture can be also seen in infrastructure with the Calpullis land property system.

The culture can also be heavily seen in street markets known as Tianguis, these markets are unlike what you would expect to see in a regular street market around the world, as these get as large as medium-sized cities, it has been recorded that at times, over 60,000 people trade in these markets, making them absolutely enormous, while the Aztec culture made up only a small portion of the native population, the infamy has lived to see the light of the modern times and is still visible in its homeland.

Mexico City has plenty more to offer though, from the amazing food to stunning scenery, modern-day Mexico is a great place to visit. The former – food, is well-loved across the globe. Such classics as Tacos, Burritos, Fajitas, and treats like Sopapilla Cheesecake or Churros are well established around the world, with many places tackling the food with their own unique blends and takes.

But it just can’t beat the wonderful authenticity of Mexico City street food.

For example, Tlayudas is a dish that will catch your eye, it’s a snack made by wrapping toppings like shredded meat, chorizo, and avocado with a large baked tortilla with a mix of refried beans and cheese.

If that doesn’t sound like a good pick me up, I don’t know what will. Another easy to grab snack are Chicharrónes, pork rinds that seemingly look to be on steroids. The savory and impossibly puffed rind goes perfectly with salsa, and if you enjoy a nice beer, no batter snack to grab along it.

When it comes to scenery, the surrounding area has some stunning places to visit, some that you would expect to only see in picture books. Prismas Basalticos, for example, a small clustered canyon that was formed by a volcanic eruption.

The interesting square-like pillars make for an interesting almost hand-made look, and the waterfall fully completes the look. The geometric basalt columns are naturally occurring and form because of slowly dripping water.

The tallest points max out at around 40 meters, making for some good photos. These interesting formations are considered to be one of the 13 natural wonders of Mexico. Another absolutely stunning one a kind location is the Grutas de Tolantongo, a resort famous for its cave formations and warm man-made pools. The pools are especially something special, creating scenery like nothing else out there.

Made to perfectly compliment the cliffside, the light yellow stone contrasting with the potent blue water makes for a perfect and beautiful spot to relax after a hot and sweaty cave exploration experience.

Situated near South America, the climate of Mexico City is excellent. With almost no fluctuation, you are bound to have great weather year-round. While the evening and early mornings can get somewhat chilly, you are in for an average of 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit), so with great temperatures, wonderful food, and nature like no other, Mexico is a place to put on your bucket lists.
